DCSE has developed a geographical information system (GIS)-based demographics aggregation tool for forecasting water demands.

This tool analyzes census information and projected demographics, land use, and other spatial data. It enables staff to quickly delineate study areas, analyze growth trends, and obtain demographics needed to accurately project water demands. The tool uses land use information as the basis for allocating forecasted demographic parameters from the census tract boundaries to selected boundaries. These chosen boundaries could include member agencies, cities, and service zones.
This tool uses Microsoft SQL spatial to store GIS layers including demographic projections from various government agencies, available census data, and a complete land-use inventory of the selected site. The data can be used for demographic analysis and forecasting water demands used in facility planning. The data generated by this tool can then serve as input to econometric models such as IWR-MAIN.
